Hanging Out East

Monday October 30- It rained most of the night and the wind was blowing. I guess the wind blew that front right through. Today we caught the bus at the park to take us to the metro station. We then walked to the National Air & Space Museum. We had been here before but it was completely different from what we remembered. The thing I liked about this was that it didn't seem overwhelming. It was set up in a way that you could make your way through the whole museum and know where you have been. We stayed here a couple hours looking.

As you walked through this place you could see everything from the Wright Brothers to the moon landing. I am a visual gal so I enjoyed just seeing all the different kinds of aircraft. Jeff likes to read and know the who, what, where, and why of it all. We left here and walked to get some lunch. The thing that's nice about D.C. is even as you are walking from place to place there are always things to see. Beautiful buildings everywhere. Here are a few of those sited.

Finally we found a place for lunch....We went to the Shake Shack. Never ate at one. They were busy and we waited to get our food, not long though. We got a table right before our food was ready. Really a good burger and the fries...yum. We found a good spot. You could even purchase a dog treat off the menu for your pup.

We made one more stop before getting back to the metro. Jeff wanted a beer so we found a Hard Rock Cafe and he did just that. Then we made it back to catch the metro. We spent just the right amount of time in the city. We have found that it's better to do a few things instead of trying to cram to much into one day.

Tuesday October 31- It was a cool morning clear and crisp. We walked Miss Ruby, then we went and caught the bus to catch the Metro. This time we are doing a change of lines. We are going to the National Zoo. Jeff wants to see the pandas.

Well we just handled the metro's like we lived here. We had help from the guy at the campground. We had a short walk to the zoo. We made our way first thing to the panda exhibit. It was wonderful. There was a spot for the pandas outside and some were also inside. We got to see both. They also had lots of displays showing how they were transported from China. It was fun to just watch them. That's what we did.

We got to the zoo fairly early and we could see that this zoo was going to be a popular place today. We moved from the pandas to the orangutans. They have a very unique system set up for them. They call it The O Line. These orangutans can climb up one tower, then travel on these  lines suspended above the park. They have zoo employee's stationed under them to warn the visitors of what is above them. We sat and watched them. We actually saw one do some traveling. It was so neat to watch. I'm glad I brought my good camera so I could get some close ups. Amazing how effortlessly they travel on those lines.

After leaving here we came across some more orangutans, a mother and baby. Had to watch them for awhile...again it's hard to walk away.

We pulled ourselves away and decided that we both wanted to get some lunch before catching our metro. We headed towards the gate and walked back toward the train station. We had walked by a B.B.Q. place getting here so decided to give it a try. Good bye zoo it was a great day. Oh did I tell you it was free to get in..

Next stop....Fat Pete's for lunch which was yummy. We got sandwiches and they were really good. so After filling our bellies we made our way to the station. Caught our train and headed for home. We are heading out tomorrow for our next adventure. Miss Ruby says Happy Halloween.

Wednesday November 1- This is a travel day. We are ready to get out of some of this traffic. We left around 9:30. The first 2 hours I think we made it about 60 miles. Lots of traffic and if the traffic thinned out they would close lanes so it was congested again. Very slow going. We arrived at Crossroad Carolina RV park. It is a real nice park. We had a pull through on concrete pad. We had 50 amp, water, sewer and cable. Well our cable didn't work but we didn't care that much. We are only here 2 nights. They also had a pool and hot tub. It was a super clean well maintained park. Everyone was super friendly too.

We really enjoyed the quietness of this place. Belle and Miss Ruby are really getting to like each other.

Thursday November 2- Today we don't have much planned. Need to unwind after all the business of the big city. We did see a Waffle House and decided to go out for breakfast. We love Waffle House. Well today we were very disappointed. The food wasn't that good, the order was messed up, the service was slow and they weren't crowded. We didn't even finish. While out Jeff filled up the truck and back to the campground. It was a warm sunny day so we spent time outside. I made a big pot of chili because it is suppose to cool off. I also made some pecan tassies for Jeff's birthday tomorrow.

Friday November 3-A BIG Happy 60th Birthday to Jeff. Before hitting the road we went up and got in the hot tub. Now that's a good way to start the day. We loaded up, hooked up and hit the road around 10. Next stop Dillon, South Carolina. The park we are staying is Basslake RV Park. It's not fancy but super easy in and out. Right off the interstate. We pulled right in and set up. We had 50 amp. water and sewer. Not a big place but it was way better than others we've been to. It was located right off the interstate. We had leftover chili for lunch. We decided to go in to town for a sandwich for supper. We went to Zaxby's. The dinner was ok. While we were out we went to Walmart. It's not our favorite place to go but necessary sometimes. The good news about this one is we found a red velvet cheesecake from the Cheesecake Factory. Had to get it for Jeff's birthday. It is his favorite.

Saturday November 4- Today we were excited for Ashton, he has a couple hockey games in Waterloo Iowa today. Seth is really good about keeping us up on what's going on it each game. So Seth was texting the score to us and I asked how Ashton was doing? He said he wasn't playing because in warm up he ran in to the boards knees first. He went to check on him and found out he really hurts. Well I was concerned but after sitting out the first game he got better. He must of hurt because he does not like to miss out on playing. He got to play in the second game and even scored a goal. He told Jeff he would try and score for him, for his birthday. That made us happy. They won both games.

It was a really nice day out so we decided to make a small road trip. On our way here we went by this most unusual place. It was called South Of The Border...Pedro's. I don't know how many signs we saw advertising this place. So that's what we did. I guess all those signs really worked.

South Of The Border or SOB as it's known is a roadside attraction that has been around for a long time.  It started with a bar in 1949 and has grown. It was a welcome sight for travelers heading down I-95. At first you might wonder what all this Mexican stuff is doing in South Carolina, thousands of miles from its natural habitat. But in a remarkably short time you'll accept SOB as a neon yellow and pink Tijuana, with the added benefit that its inhabitants speak English and its water is safe to drink. The mascot is Pedro a grinning mustachioed caricature topped with an oversized sombrero. Both Jeff and I were surprised with all the stuff there...and its big. We just couldn't pass it up. We came home and watched the Iowa Hawkeyes play Ohio State who is ranked 3..they just beat them 55-24.... it was a crazy game, that's for sure.

Sunday November 5- It's that time of year...fall back. Neither of us enjoy this time change. Today we are driving in to Myrtle Beach. We thought we couldn't be so close with out seeing what everyone has seen. We both were up super early, so we left early. We saw a gospel brunch thing that goes on Sunday mornings in The House Of Blues. Kind of missing church so we decided to give it a go. We got there just as they were opening. We tried to make reservations but they never called back. It wasn't a problem, we got a table. I am not really much of a buffet kind of a gal but this was a good one. They didn't have tables and tables full but what they had was good. The service was great too.

The price of the buffet was $33.00 per person. It was a little pricey but like I said the food was really good, service was good and the atmosphere was great. We enjoyed ourselves. Now to find the beach and boardwalk....

Well we found it. The sun came out and it was a pretty day for a walk. We walked on the boardwalk and looked at the water. Jeff found an arcade that had lots of older games. He sat down and played a bit. We left here and made 2 more stops. First I found a Krispy Kreme doughnut...had to get me a dozen. Then we filled up the truck and went home.

Monday November 6- Today we are making our way to Skidaway Island State Park in Savannah Georgia. It was very foggy this morning but it burnt off fairly quickly. We were on the road at 8:30. We have been to this park before in 2013. We remember having a hard time but not this time. We found us a nice spot and pulled in. This is a wonderful park with lots of trees, covered in spanish moss.Drove to the 1st campground and site number 2. We have 50 amp, water and cable. The shower house was close so that was convenient.

After getting all set up we unloaded the bikes. We rode around looking at the park, also walked Miss Ruby.

Tuesday November 7- Foggy this morning. Took the bike rack off the rig and put it on the back of the truck. Then we loaded up the bikes and took then in to Savannah. We drove in the the Train Museum and parked there. Made a stop at the visitor center to get a map. We first rode to Clary's for breakfast. The last time we came in we ate here and there breakfast was amazing. The good thing about the historic district in Savannah is it is only 1 square mile. Really easy to get around.

For breakfast Jeff had a western omelette, I got the stuffed french toast. It was stuffed with cream cheese and strawberries. Someone recommended this and last time i chickened out. So this time I got it. Our waitress was very helpful letting me know that I could just get a 1/2 order. That was plenty for me and I even let Jeff try some. Jumped back on our bikes and headed toward the water front. We made lots of stops looking at the beautiful architecture. I love these old cities. Here are a few of what we got to see.

When we arrived at the water front we saw a big crowd of people standing around watching something. We found out that they are filming a stunt scene for a movie here today. The movie is Killerman, starring Liam Hemsworth. We made our way to see and watched for awhile but a whole lot of nothing was going on. Then everyone left for lunch. That's when we made our way down by the water and watched some of the big freighters. They are huge....

We walked in and out of the shops. Sat and watched the boats. Then we made our way back to the spot where the movie scene is happening. The crowd was back. We stood and watched and watched and watched. we would get a spot where we could see and then they would tell us we have to move. This happened more than once. After about 2 hours we got to see the stunt. They kept telling us to put away our phones.

Finally after all that wait the stunt was a success. It went as planned and no one was hurt.  We got back on our bikes and found the truck. Loaded up and headed back to the rig and our pups. It was a nice day in the city.

Wednesday November 8- Decided not to do an all day outing today. Our waitress yesterday told us about The Isle of Hope. She said its a pretty place to drive thru. It's not far from the campground, so that's what we did. We found it. On one side of the road were these beautiful southern homes. On the other side of the road was water. The trees in this neighborhood were unbelievable. So pretty. I didn't get a lot of pictures but here are a couple.

On our way back we stopped at the store. We had  all afternoon to enjoy here. Thought we would see if Ruby would like to ride in my basket on my bike. Soffee loved going for bike rides. Well I bungied her in to make sure she didn't jump out. She did really good and I think she likes it.

It was a nice bike ride. I love my new bike too.

Thursday November 9- It's gray and gloomy today so instead of hanging around the rig all day we decided to take a trip to Camping World. Jeff needed a part to fix our blue boy. Bonus for me I found a Hobby Lobby. After our shopping was done we had lunch at The Cracker Barrel. We had to go back into town this evening to get Miss Ruby here rabies shot. We set up an appointment at Petsmart. They were very friendly and helpful there. Ruby even liked them, she did really good.

Friday November 10- Well the rain has moved out and the sunshine and blue skies appeared. Today we had planned to take a trip to Tybee Island. They have a lighthouse we wanted to see. We took our bikes so we could check out the area. We picked a very clear day to go. We looked and the buildings surrounding the lighthouse. Then we climbed the 178 steps to the top and had a look. It was really windy up there but the view was magnificent.

When we got home Jeff made us a campfire. It was a perfect evening for that. The wind died down and the temperatures were cool. We sat outside and had a nice evening. Ruby liked it too.

Saturday November 11- It is gray and cool again today. It also Veterians Day. We thought about taking another trip to Savannah but they had a big parade going on so we decided to stay here. Instead we went in and got some hot Krisy Kreme doughnuts....yum. Went ahead and filled up the truck for traveling. The doughnuts were.....delicious.

We went back home and waited for Seth to keep us up with Ashton's hockey game. The first game Ashton had 2 goals and they won 10-1. They had a second game today but not until later this evening. In the meantime I worked on making Christmas ornaments. We also watched the Iowa Hawkeyes play. Well we could hardly watch it was a horrible loss. They must have used all there good plays last week because nothing seemed to be working today. The good news...Ashton's team won there second game 12-0. Seth says the team is really playing well.

Sunday November 12- We decided to hang around here all day today. I took Ruby for her morning walk and noticed the park was setting up tables across the way. Well they are hosting Pups and Trucks. It's  pet adoption weekend. They had some pups to adopt and food venders. They also had some puppy venders there. I took Ruby over and everyone wanted to give her treats. She loved being around all the dogs. It didn't matter big or small she loves them all. The same with people. She really gets excited. I couldn't hardly get her out of there. I had to carry her. Jeff went over later with Belle and I brought Miss Ruby back. She just loved all the puppy's. We even met another dog named Ruby Tuesday.

Ashton had another game this morning and they won, he had another great game. Now they will play for the championship. Ashton will not be playing because he and his dad have tickets for the Chicago Blackhawk's tonight. It was Ashton's birthday present. They sat second row from the glass. He sent me some of the pictures.

Patrick Kane even tossed Ashton a puck. The game was a high scoring game but the Blackhawk's loss. The good news on the other hand was The Iowa City Blizzard won the championship. Now back on the home front all those treats that Ruby got today gave her a tummy ache. No more special treats for her. I have been working on finishing my Christmas ornaments and I finished them today....

Tomorrow we hit the road, landing in Florida.
